Task 3

INSTRUCTIONS

After analysing the design of your choice in Task 2, you will now produce a work of design, inspired/influenced by the one you had analysed, or as a reaction to it. You should also apply your knowledge of design principles in your creation. You may use any medium and/or materials that are suitable to convey your visual message. Direct use of photographs is not permitted. Any work that is found plagiarised will result in an F grade for the overall module and the student will be subjected to the policies of the University concerning academic misconduct.

Requirements In your Task 3 Design post in the blog, include:

1. a recap of Task 3 brief
2. some visual references (cite the sources) that inspire your own ideas
3. 3-5 sketches (manual/digital) of your own ideas
4. final design in A4 size, JPEG
5. a rationale, in about 150-200 words, explaining/defending the decisions made in your design, the meaning/purpose of the design and the design principles that are found in the design.
6. feedback from the lecturer

A final reflection that responds to the questions below:
• What have I learnt in this module?
• What did I enjoy the most?
• What did I not enjoy the most?
• What have I learnt about myself through this module?
• What has changed and what has not in my learning journey?
• What could be improved in this module?

Submission

1. Blog links of Task 3 & Final Compilation

2. JPEG (A4 size) file of your final design, labelled as <Your
Name_Title of Design_Task 3>

3. One PDF file of all your blog posts (Tasks 1-3 and Final
Compilation), labelled as <Your Name_202402_Design Principles
Blog>
- First, save each blog post as a PDF file. To do so, right click on
the post, select Print and then Save As PDF.

- Then, combine all the PDF files into one file. If you do not know
how to do this, watch this video.

TASK 3

Sketches:
Fig 1.1 sketch 1

a poor boy being trapped behind, not being able to get food, fork acts as an obstacle stopping him

Fig 1.2 sketch 2

playing with the words of the title and using different shapes/figures that fits the alphabets and relate to no poverty

Fig 1.3 sketch 3

I thought this idea would be too literal but I still kinda liked it. Basically, it's just showing how no one pays attention to the people in need while the fortunate people are getting too much unnecessary attention.

Visual references:

Fig 2.1 visual references that inspired me

Steps on how i created the design:

Fig 3.1 process of creating and shaping fork using pen tool + curvature tool

Fig 3.2  boy's features rough sketch

Fig 3.3 steak's initial look, didn't like it so I tried to do some research on how steaks look like to have a better idea on how to improve my steak

Fig 3.4 my try on sketch 2, however after Ms Jinchi's feedback, I decided to stick to sketch 1

Fig 3.5 before feedback (left) after feedback (right)

As seen above, I did major improvements on the qualities of my subject matters, for example adding more details and shadows. I also tried to match the colors to make it look more harmonized.

Rationale:

"Trapped" is a portrait artwork depicting a poor boy stuck behind a fork, which appears like prison bars with a huge plate of delicious steak right in front of him, but not being able to have a bite of it.  The purpose of this artwork is to vividly illustrate the theme of poverty through its powerful imagery and symbolism. The artwork not only encourages contemplation about the pressing necessity to tackle poverty but also underscores the significant disparities depicted between the rich and poor. This portrayal evokes thoughts about United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 1 (UNSDG 1), which seeks to eradicate poverty comprehensively. In this design, the contrast is shown by using two different tones of colors: dull as well as bright. I used brighter colors for the steak and boy, then used a dull background which won’t snatch the attention away. This not only shows contrast, but also creates emphasis on the two main subjects. Furthermore, the balanced composition of the artwork, accentuated by its centralized elements, contributes significantly to its overall impact and effectiveness.

FEEDBACK

Week 7
  • Design wise first is better, composition is more united
  • Draft 2 is too messy
  • Adding more things like peas, making the dish look more delicious, adding more poverty details to the boy
  • Steps how i create the design is optional
  • Add more details to convey the message clearer

REFLECTION

In this module, I have learned the design principles and how to differentiate them. Not only that, I have also developed the skill of identifying them in artworks. I enjoyed the design process the most as I had the freedom of creativity to produce a work on a strong topic, No Poverty. This helped me think a lot through the design process as I had to put a lot of things into consideration like for example, will the message be delivered well to all viewers? is the design well balanced? what can be improved? There was nothing I did not enjoy in particular however, I did find writing a visual analysis slightly challenging as i had trouble differentiating the purpose of each section in a visual analysis. Through this module, I learned that I am quite particular about the placement of subjects in an artwork. I will think about the purpose of why was the placement there and so on. Nothing much has changed in my learning journey as it was a very short semester but I must say I have learned a lot on how to improve my design, thanks to the helpful feedbacks from my lecturer. In my opinion, there's not anything in particular to be improved on but I think providing some examples for our assignments can help develop a better understanding for students.
